THIS MONTH AT
WROUGHTON PARISH CHURCH

Rocky's Plaice Holiday Club
This year Holiday Club will run from 9am - 12noon on
9th - 13th August.  If you know any children aged 5 to 11yrs who would like to come, booking forms are available in church or from the parish office, Jean Ford or Barbara Abrey.  Please pray for the leaders as they prepare for Rocky's Plaice and that parents will send their children.

Church shirts
If you are not a Holiday Club helper and have one of the blue church T-shirts that we use for the team, could you please let Jean Ford or Barbara Abrey have it for use at this year's club.

Healing on the streets is coming to Wroughton
The first training course for HOTS is now nearly
complete.  The last session (no. 6) is to take place in Church on Wednesday 1st September at 8.00pm.  The launch has been set for Saturday 18th September at 10.00am in the
Ellendune shopping precinct. So far about 12
people have said they want to be involved with the
project.  However as the ministry is to be offered every week, we would welcome more helpers.   If you would like to 'get involved' but have not been able to come to the Wednesday evening training sessions which we've been
holding, or you have missed out on some of the sessions, please speak to Michael Johnson or David Penfound.  We will be only too pleased to re-run the training sessions on a day/evening to suit you, or to organise catch-up sessions for any who would like them.  Whether or not you are or want to be involved in the ministry, please make HOTS a topic for your prayers, as if it is to succeed, underpinning by regular, faithful prayer is essential.

THE CHURCH IN THE WIDER WORLD

World Vision, one of our church's main charities,
continues to work with the people of Haiti following the earthquake in January.
World Vision has:
Provided 16.8 million litres of clean water
Distributed food to more than 1.86 million people
Reached more than 7,700 children each week in 22 Child-Friendly Spaces in camps throughout affected areas
Distributed tarpaulins, tents, blankets, kitchen sets and other vital household items to about 120,000 people
Registered more than 760 children separated from their families during the earthquake, through the
family tracing and reunification unit and helped reunite as many as possible with their families.

Please pray that this work will continue to improve the lives of those still suffering in the aftermath of the earthquake and demonstrate the love of Christ in practical ways.

GENERAL NOTICES

"This years Wiltshire Historic Churches Cycle Ride and Walk,
organised by the Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust, takes place on Saturday 11th September. The event seeks participants to raise sponsorship by visiting as many Wiltshire Churches as they are able in the day, either by bike or on foot, commencing at 10.00 am and concluding at 6.00 pm. The participating Churches take you across the county's urban and rural scenery. Whether you just want to visit an handful of churches or fill the whole day, it doesn't matter - if you are interested in taking part in this sponsored event, raising money for the maintenance and fabric of Wiltshire's many and varied historic church buildings, please contact local event organiser, Mike Mason (tel 632574)for further details and a sponsor form."

Filling Station Sandwiches
It is our turn to provide sandwiches for the Filling Station on Thursday 19th August.  There is a sign-up list on the church chest, please put your name down for anything you are able to provide.
The sandwiches should be delivered before 5.00pm on the day to 11 St John Road.  Your help is much appreciated by those whom the Filling Station serves.  If you have any questions or want further information, please speak to David or Margaret Penfound (tel. 812139)

Supper and Chat
A Barbeque and Hymns of Praise was enjoyed by members and their friends at The Brown Jack on Tuesday evening 27th July. Many thanks to Helen Toomer who played for us.

The next meeting will be on Monday 6th September at The Brown Jack at 8.30pm. Do come and join us for a drink and interesting conversation, discussion and occasionally
arguments, very often on topical issues.

Quiet Day at St Mary's Convent Wantage -
Thursday 19th August.
If you want to get away from phones, children, housework or whatever, please consider coming to this Quiet day to revel in some "holy peace and quiet" .
We will attend a Service of the Eucharist at 10.00am, followed at approx.10.45am by coffee and discussion
together until 12.30pm. Bring your own lunch.
After lunch everyone pleases themselves whether it is reading, visiting the art room, meditation and prayer in one of the chapels, sleeping, or sunbathing in the grounds. Of course you can please yourself in the morning as well - just being there with us to start with and then go and do your own thing - there is no compulsion to join us.

If anyone is interested, I am going for a personal Quiet Day on my own on Thursday 5th August, and you wish  to accompany me, please let me know.

Don't hesitate to buttonhole me in church during coffee, or ring me on 813573

The Filling Station
Now we operate on two evenings a week, we need some help to “tidy” the van for the Tuesday run. This will not take as long as the Thursday rota (as currently we do not have enough tins for two days a week), but could be done by one person on a rota basis with others.  Ideally we need 4 people to cover the month. Please let me know if you can help.
Angus Macpherson (812259).

Men’s Group
The next meeting will be on Saturday 7th August at
11 St John Road at 8.30am. For more information please contact Peter (845409).

Cleaning
An opportunity exists for two hours cleaning per week in a flat in Wroughton. If you are interested, please phone 07785 957291. The vicar has more details.

Birthdays
Happy Birthday to Joyce Davis, Marion Colton, Brian
Bailey, Jean Reens, Ann Richards, Joyce Pounder and Geoffrey Hamilton who celebrate their birthdays this week.

Floodlighting
The Church was floodlit on Wednesday 28th July by Iris Lopes in memory of Bill (Barney) Lopes and by
The Trollope Family in memory of their mother,
Mary Ellen Trollope.

Choir Awards
We congratulate both Keith Bassett and Fleur Layland for successfully taking their RSCM Bronze singing assessments recently.  Both excelled with Keith receiving a Merit and Fleur gaining a Distinction.

We commend to God’s care and keeping those who have died recently, Reginald Hunt, Doreen Nelmes and Kathleen Tranter and we pray for all who mourn. We pray for those who have given their lives in the service of the crown,
Corporal Matthew James Stenton, Lance Corporal Stephen Daniel Monkhouse, Sapper Mark Antony Smith who were repatriated this week.
