Aims
- To intercede for the ministry of the church to the parish of Wroughton
- To learn from biblical models and teaching about prayer
- To explore different ways of praying together and as individuals
It is our deep desire to grow closer to God through prayer.
The current prayer meeting began in August 2002 and has met fortnightly ever since (with pauses for Advent and Lent). It has been a journey of exploration with moments of shared encounter with God which stay long in the memory. We have been able to trace God’s faithfulness in answered prayer and are encouraged to continue praying and reflecting together.
The meeting is open to all. It usually meets between 8.00- 9.30pm on Tuesdays and we are grateful to Legge House for their hospitality in allowing us to meet in the Uffcott Room. (Please see the regular notices for dates of current meetings)
Sometimes the thought of meeting with others to pray brings a catalogue of fears about being put on the spot and expected to speak out loud. To counter these fears we have our own list of (somewhat quirky) ‘rules’.
- We do not believe that vocalised prayer is any better than silent prayer.
- We do not judge the quality of prayer according to its vocabulary, grammatical or syntactic sophistication.
- We shall make it clear when prayer is ending…and not by shuffling our feet!
- We will not use verbal prayer as a means of putting each other right or passing on gossip.
- We believe that prayer meetings are not to be guilt inducing- please come when you can and when you want to, not because you feel you OUGHT to.
Some of our teaching series have been based on books:
The Lord and His Prayer- Tom Wright
Listening to God –Joyce Huggett
The Ministry of Intercessory Prayer –Andrew Murray
Drawing Nearer to God –Mark Stibbe
